Frequently Asked Questions
How easy is it to steer and control the boat?
Controlling a narrow boat is not difficult and no previous experience is needed. All you need to remember is that given the weight of a canal boat (Meredith weighs over 14 tonnes!) things tend to happen rather slowly - and so you need to think ahead a little. The speed limit on the navigations is just 4 miles per hour, so its best to do things at a relaxed pace. Full instruction on everything you will need to know will be given when you arrive at the boat

Where can we moor the boat at night?
You can moor anywhere you like along the canals and rivers so long as you moor on the towpath side of the navigation – and are not causing an obstruction. Whether you chose to moor near a village pub, in the centre of town or in the middle of the countryside is entirely up to you!

What do I need to bring with me?
Everything you’d expect on a self-catering holiday will be on board the boat. All you’ll need to bring are your clothes, tea towels and towels and all linen will be provided unless you wish to bring your own ( if so let us know when you book so I can remove them from the boat.) of course your food and drink. Don’t forget in relation to this last item that the “drink drive” limits for captaining boats are exactly the same as those for driving a car!

Can I bring my pets with me?
One well behaved dog is allowed on the narrow boat, although must be kept off the furniture at all times. Please bring your pet’s blanket/basket with you. An additional charge may be made upon the return of the boat if it is felt additional cleaning is necessary.

What about safety?
All members of the group should wear non-slip shoes or trainers when on board. We also recommend that both children and non-swimmers wear buoyancy aids. These are provided free of charge before your departure. You must inculded weigths of people who require the aids and the numbers required when booking

Can I bring my bike with me?
Yes – and you’ll find the towpaths provide for some excellent cycling. However, you must also bring a blanket on which to lay your bike. The costs of any damage to the boat’s paintwork will be deducted from your Security Deposit.

What if we break down?
Your narrow boat is of a very sturdy construction and is very reliable. If in the unlikely event that you do encounter a problem then you are fully cover under the inclusive Breakdown Cover and all contact numbers will be contained in the
